Univest volunteers help LifePath clean house!

It was a hot, sticky, muggy and buggy summer day when four Univest employees volunteered at two LifePath houses with LifePath employees and muscled out an afternoon of trimming, raking and weeding the landscape overgrowth that the tropical-like Lehigh Valley weather produced.

And what they got for their hard work was the satisfaction of “giving back” to the community and a rash of poison ivy.

“Everyone did such a great job but we feel so bad that we all got poison ivy,” said Nancy Ingram, Director of Residential Services at LifePath. “A week later and we’re all still itching,” she said.

The Univest employees came to LifePath as part of the Univest Bank and Trust’s “Committed to Local” philanthropic promise.  Last year, Univest supported 485 organizations, gave away over 1.5 Million dollars and employees logged in over 17,600 hours of community service.

“For 140 years, Univest has made it a priority to give back to the communities it serves by providing financial support, leadership and volunteerism,” said Kim Detwiler, Senior Vice President and Director of Corporate Communications.

LifePath was on the receiving end of both the financial support and volunteerism accepting $6,000 in event sponsorships, and volunteers to help service the community homes.

“When volunteers come to our houses to do landscaping, painting, the cleaning of gutters or basic maintenance operations, it allows us to use our resources for more service-oriented activities for our individuals,”  Nancy said. “Landscaping always gets pushed to the bottom of the list. Having Univest’s extra hands was beneficial in so many ways,” she said.

The volunteers worked LifePath’s Cherry Lane and Moselle houses, which are home to 6 individuals. LifePath is a nonprofit organization that provides homes and programs to 1400 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in seven Pennsylvania counties.

In November, LifePath will host its biggest fundraising event of the year, The Thanksgiving Benefit and Awards Luncheon featuring keynote speaker Jim Craig, the 1980 US Olympic Ice Hockey Goalie who held off the Soviets for a “Miracle on Ice!”  Univest will be a prestigious Platinum sponsor at this event.
